Abstract

This article recounts the history to abolish capital punishment in Great Britain. Led by several groups including the Howard League for Penal Reform and the National Council for the Abolition of Capital Punishment, the movement to ban executions took decades and achieved final success in 1964. The ban was, in part, a reaction to the Homicide Act of 1957.
