Highly complex and differentiated societies overreaching the theoretical framework supporting their raison d'être beget new perspectives. The objective of this study, namely, analyzing the theoretical proposal of Niklas Luhmann, is thus justified. The content of the paper draws directly on his book Social Systems: Guidelines for a General Theory, and is complemented with opinions about the author in different scientific and academic circles. Diverse concepts allow for an assessment of his theory and transition in terms of continuity and rupture with the classical tenet, to conclude with his main contributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
