Abstract

The article discusses research regarding the discovery of an anti-HIV therapy. The focus of the article is research by Dan Barouch and colleagues who tested adenovirus-based vaccines in monkeys using the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), which is an HIV-related virus. Also discussed is the phase II HIV-vaccine trial by Merck called STEP, the problems with the STEP study, such as the kind of adenovirus used, and how Barouch's group identified and developed rare-serotype adenovirus vectors.
