The article features U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Michael Gates. He was not in government when the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, nor was he the architect of the surge strategy by the administration of George W. Bush, though he became its chief advocate on Capitol Hill. Though most of his career has been in public service, Gates was working in academia when he was asked in 2005 by Bush to become the first director of national intelligence, a position created after the 9/11 intelligence failures.
