In this article the author discusses the achievements of adult education during and after World War II, which had trained many people with skills to handle the challenges of civilian jobs on their return. He is critical of the adult education system needing to help people learn basic skills and not only to help people who have lost their jobs. Also investigated is the green paper "The Learning Age," about education for its own sake.
