Abstract

This paper focuses on American public opinion, addressing three broad clusters of issues. Section One presents survey findings on six questions about the war: Did the United States do the right thing in using force against Iraq? How well is the American military effort going? Has the undertaking in Iraq made the U.S. safer from the threat of terrorism? Has the war in Iraq been worth its costs? How long should the U.S. keep its military forces in Iraq? And finally, to what extent have the war and American difficulties in achieving the administration's central goals—a secure and democratic Iraq—divided the country along partisan lines, thereby reducing the prospects of bipartisan cooperation on foreign policy? ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
