Abstract

The article discusses an announcement from officials at the European particle physics laboratory (CERN) that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will take longer to fix than previously expected. The world's highest energy particle smasher will not start up again before September 2009. This provides the Tevatron collider at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) with an opportunity to spot the Higgs boson, which is the last missing piece in the standard model of fundamental particles. Quotes are provided by University of Padua physicist Tommaso Dorigo and Fermilab's Rob Roser.
