Abstract

The article discusses the use of action research, a form of investigative research that focuses on resolving problems, in education. The author discusses how mathematics teacher Janice Templeton utilized action research to investigate why minority, English language learners (ELLs) and female students lacked engagement in math courses. The author notes how Templeton observed student apathy and lack of participation in class discussions and assignments and gathered data through educational literature and collaboration with other teachers. Templeton developed appropriate lesson plans for students of different skill levels and used a math puzzle to assess student abilities.
