Abstract

Chapter 2 of the book "Expressing Islam: Religious Life and Politics in Indonesia" is presented. It examines the process of Islamic commodification as well as analyzes the ways in which it is changing religious, cultural and economic life in Indonesia. A description of some of the manifestations of Islamic consumption for the financial and non-financial sectors is provided. It also argues about the nature of the mainstream Islamic market which, the author says, is rational and pluralistic rather than emotional and exclusivist.
