Abstract

The article reports that Indonesia and Malaysia have jointly cleared thousands of square miles of native forests for monoculture palm oil plantations. This process, which includes burning forests and draining peat swamps, has made Indonesia the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. This degradation of habitat could eradicate orangutan populations from the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra.
