Abstract

The article reports on the decline in profit and volume of sales of the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company Unilever in the first quarter of 2009. It is inferred that the move of Unilever to stop increasing prices as a part of a market strategy of chief executive officer (CEO) Paul Polman did not help to prevent the decline. The unstable economic condition in some countries was cited by Polman as the reason for the performance of Unilever. The company could possibly be interested in acquiring a business unit of Sara Lee Corp., according to analysts.
