Abstract

This article focuses on new literary models of agency for literary criticism in African studies. It discusses four dominant scholarly models of agency, the static model, annihilation model, resistance model, and appropriation model. The author provides an overview of the reciprocal enculturation model, which is considered as a relatively new social science agency model, the literary scholarship that depended on such a model, and its implications for Afrocentric arguments. A new agency model which depended on the written and oral definition of texts in various African literary studies is also indicated.
