Abstract

The article examines how federal regulations pertaining to enterprise in the U.S. have economically and politically impacted businesses within the nation. Numerous indicators suggest that the cost for businesses of complying with regulations is rapidly growing. A study conducted by Weidenbaum Center Forum director Melinda Warren and her colleague Susan Dudley examined what amount is spent annually by U.S. federal regulatory agencies on regulatory activities. The author examines the potential for excessive regulation to impede competitiveness, thereby jeopardizing America’s status as a global leader. The Council of Competitiveness is discussed as a positive mechanism for balancing policy and business.
