Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the amount of time that fathers in the U.S. spend on child care activities, based on the American Time Use Survey data from 2003 and 2004. The average amount of time spent by fathers as primary caregivers nearly tripled between 1965 and 2000. This is thought to be due to the rise of working mothers. The study results confirmed that fathers with working wives spend more time as primary caregivers for their children than fathers with nonworking wives do. This trend is especially strong when the children are infants or toddlers.
