Abstract

The article presents a study which determines the loss to care and mortality rates among patients infected with HIV before starting their antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Durban, South Africa. The researchers examined data from 501 patients who were eligible for ART at an HIV clinic. The study reveals that loss to care and death happen frequently before beginning ART in the clinic, and suggests that ART initiation must be prioritized for patients with low baseline CD4 counts.
