Of all migrant casual workers, construction workers as a group do the hardest work, the most dangerous jobs, and have the fewest guarantees. The vocation has a low threshold, is labor intensive, and engages a vast number of people, thus becoming the starting point for many migrant workers in their quest to make a living away from home or as a means of accumulating "seed capital."
