Abstract

Different incentives that have been applied in Latin American and Caribbean countries to promote silvopastoral systems are discussed in terms of their scope, limitations and synergy potential to accelerate the environmental reconversion of cattle ranching. The transformation of Latin American cattle ranching towards friendlier production models and agroforestry systems requires enormous effort and long cultural and technological transitions, both of which demand economic instruments to promote fast and reliable adaptation to the changing climatic and economic conditions of the world. For this reason, numerous public and private projects and international cooperation programs have applied and evaluated incentive mechanisms for the adoption of agroecological practices and silvopastoral systems with different intervention models and variable results. The range of incentives goes from conventional approaches such as the donation of trees, fodder shrubs and inputs or subsidies for hand labor to direct payment for the environmental services provided by cattle ranches.
