Abstract

This paper scrutinizes the current and future state of Sino-American relations. The positive and negative factors that characterizes Chinese-U.S. relations are closely interwoven and often run into one another. On the negative end is the battle currently underway between the two powers for "hegemonic status" in the Asian Pacific. On a more positive note is the building of greater economic (and mutually beneficial) partnership between Washington and Beijing. Perhaps most importantly, Washington and Beijing have several vital common interests, notably in the war against terrorism and the desire for strategic stability in the Pacific, South Asia, Middle East and Eurasia. Key concepts and issues discussed/examined include: emerging superpower, security threats, Taiwan, North Korea, "harmonious world," Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO), and Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
