Abstract

In this paper, I explore some of the tensions and contradictions inherent in the relationship between space and freedom when viewed through the lens of gender relations. I argue that there is a basic, irresolvable tension within democracy's ideal of freedom as inclusive participation in public space. Rather than look to the radical destruction of boundedness, or to unbound, "undomesticated" spaces as sites of radical democratic freedom, I propose that spaces of freedom might be found in those very place where we draw our boundaries and borders; we might examine these "in-between" spaces, or points of contact, seeking to understand how private or apolotical spaces are turned into democratic, public ones through collective constestation and the construction of new meaning. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
