Abstract
- This article presents a study which focuses on the dynamic that makes midterm elections as presidential referenda in the U.S. The study makes use of the data from the American National Election Studies and the contextual data from constituency level. These data show that attacking the president's policies lessens the probability of voting for the candidate of the president's party. Moreover, the data also suggest that the impact of presidential assessments on voters' choices is greater in House districts where the president is attacked.
