The article presents an overview of the proper diagnosis and treatment of hyperhidrosis, which is a of a non life threatening physiological disorder of the sympathetic nervous system characterized by excessive sweating. A discussion of the psychological, professional and social consequences of hyperhidrosis is presented. A lack of understanding of the pathophysiology of hyperhidrosis which exists and of the disorder's prevalence in the U.S. is discussed.
