The present review focuses on several aspects related to the browning of tissue culture explants grown in vitro. This situation is frequently observed in several species, especially in woody plants, with important economic and practical implications. In order to achieve a better understanding of the phenomenon, this review discusses aspects of the causes, development, biological utility and triggering factors, among others.
