Abstract
- The article explores the impact of the scheduled retirement of the space shuttle fleet at the Kennedy Space Center on U.S. civil space contractors. In response to the retirement, United Space Alliance (USA), a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co., will lay off 5% of its workforce in October 2009. Elon Musk, the founder of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), a California venture that has developed its own rockets, explains how the retirement of the space shuttle would benefit his business.
