This paper presents similarities and differences between Tzotzil, Jakaltek, Tembé, Xavante, Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (EP) regarding the focus and topic distinction. Based on similarities and differences between these languages, we propose a linguistic grouping of them. We observe that beyond the distinction between them in relation to strategies of the focus and topic distinction, it is also possible to distinguish close languages, as EP and BP, considering the focus phenomenon. Whereas EP can distinguish different focus types by different strategies, BP signs focus essentially by the assignment of the main prominence of the sentence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
