Abstract

Zinc oxide supported catalysts were prepared by impregnation method with aqueous solutions of KOH and K2CO3 and tested for the transesterification of canola oil with methanol resulting in Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) at the temperature range between 298-333 K and methanol/oil ratios of 6/1-15/1. Both catalysts, KOH and K2CO3 impregnated into ZnO, were found to be the active catalysts resulting in very high conversion of triglyceride (94% and 96% respectively) for transesterification of canola oil at 333 K with methanol/oil ratio of 12/1. Methanol was found to be much more reactive than ethanol in the transesterification reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
