Abstract
- The article introduces a method for middle school students to understand the multiplication of binomials and produce the equivalence (a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2. It presents various problem representations which help students to create algebraic notation for multiplying binomials by naming and seeing quantities in various ways. It also offers an overview of problems wherein the two-dimensional array representation and an area model for squaring binomial is used.
