Abstract

The article discusses the nature and significance of citizen journalism (CitJ). Also known as participatory, open source, grassroots, networked or distributed journalism, CitJ involves the use of technology and the Internet to distribute user-generated news and comments on various topics. Stories from users are not edited, screened and checked before being posted online. Contributors may even include people lacking formal journalism experience.
