Abstract

The tsunami disaster mobilized an immense humanitarian effort, and galvanized the public and the media to reorient their perception of Aceh. This paper seeks to examine how the Indonesia media's coverage of Aceh changed its reporting after the tsunami from an 'us versus them' negative frame to a positive, inclusionary frame. The drastic change in the Jakarta Post's reporting was the change towards an empathetic and a deeper sense of ownership of the Acehnese's well-being. It examines the disparities in national and international media coverage of the conflicts in Aceh, and asserts that the disparity between the national and international coverage of Aceh served numerous political and ultimately constructive goals. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
