Abstract

This paper is an examination of Rousseau's criticisms of the Enlightenment as treated in his novel Julie. There his hero St. Preux visits Paris and compares its morals to the ancient city, as well as to love. He finds that cosmopolitanism degrades both virtue and affection and that its degradations of life are reflected in both its social and moral sciences and its arts. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
