Abstract

The article discusses trends towards use by states of high school exit examinations for several purposes. It notes an increase from 2002 to 2009 in states that withhold diplomas from students who do not pass exit exams. In addition, more states use the exit exams for accountability under the U.S. No Child Left Behind Act. States are not consistent, however, in the cutoff scores they use for accountability.
