Abstract

The article presents a study which investigates the level of immune activation in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) uninfected and HIV-infected individuals after antiretroviral treatment (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa. It was found out that tumor necrosis factor, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and IL-1 receptor antagonist were higher in HIV infected individuals than the HIV-uninfected people. In addition, it shows that ART decreases cytokines close to the levels of the HIV-uninfected individuals.
