Abstract

The article focuses on the concept of building online communities that leverage software development among colleges and universities and discusses issues related to it. It is stated that the use of open-source software has risen within the higher education community as a working, open-source alternative to learning management systems. Reportedly, however, there hasn't been enough interest in working together as an academic community to jointly develop academic-specific open-source software tools as a whole . It further suggests that in order to drive the development of academic community-sourced software, commitment and motivation need to be established among colleges and universities to support software products that are cost-effective.
