Abstract

The article reports on the research of psychologist Elizabeth Phelps and colleagues from New York University on ways of eliminating fearful memories, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. They found that a person's stored memory is called up and experienced anew and re-stored in a process known as reconsolidation. Moreover, she found that these painful memories can be eradicated by using behavioural manipulation or extinction training.
