Abstract

At the beginning of this century, a drastic change occurred in the profile of sugar beet varieties grown in Serbia. The change was a result of the fact that rhizomania had spread across the entire sugar beet-growing range in the country. Up until that point, Serbian sugar beet growers made use of monogerm triploid varieties that were highly productive and well-adapted. However, because they lacked resistance to rhizomania, they were replaced with monogerm diploid varieties resistant to the disease. The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops has developed a number of varieties of the latter type, and the present paper describes the results of a multi-year study of five of them (Sara, Lara, Dreana, Darija, Irina) carried out in six locations in Vojvodina. In the trials, the varieties exhibited a high potential for yield (root yields of over 100 t/ha, sugar yields of more than 15 t/ha), a high sugar content (above 16.00%), and very good technological characteristics. The other factors that affected the yields and quality in addition to genotype (variety) were year (weather conditions) and location and their interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
