Abstract

The article discusses designs for sustainability including those for the global household. Designs for sustainability, also known as appropriate technology, include achievements in the areas of shelter, health, and water resources. The purpose of design sustainability is the make consumer products more environmentally-friendly to produce, use, and recycle. An overview of why there is no central Web clearinghouse for appropriate technology, including the contextual nature of design, examples of sustainable inventions, such as the Q Drum water container for use by people in developing countries, and the benefits of university classroom design laboratories is presented.
