Abstract

Compiling a large-scale Qing History is an important cultural project. To achieve complete success in this, it is worth learning from successful experience in history compilation at all times and from all over the world, especially that of the Chinese historiographic tradition. This tradition demonstrates (1) the advantage of compiling a history of the previous dynasty; (2) the importance of government involvement; and (3) the strength of combining efforts of experts and researchers from different fields. These observations suggest that we should lose no time in starting to compile the Qing History, and that the success of this compilation depends on strong support from the government and the unrelenting efforts of experts and researchers from various fields.
