Abstract
- The article discusses the nature and history of scholarly communication. The origins of scholarly communication are discussed, mentioning that the earliest signs of scholarly communication existed in the civilization of the ancient Greeks. The development of the concept of scholarly communication is described, noting that it has traditionally been a product of universities. The need for scholarly communication to spread is also noted, discussing the importance of knowledge generated as a result of research for knowledge-based societies and the ability for the Internet to allow the sharing of information.
