Abstract

The article discusses the problem of who decides when a student is ready to graduate from high school. It notes that it is important the the public feel confident in the worth of a diploma, and notes varying standards. Some states require students to complete the curriculum yet base the graduation decision on one standardized test. The author suggests that standardized tests stay in the system but that graduation decisions be made by local committees based on grades, tests and outside projects.
