Abstract

The article discusses a teaching model known as Book in a Bag (BIB) which is a holistic, integrated approach to managing students' social, emotional and academic needs. BIB enables educators to focus not only on the literacy skills of their students, but also on social studies and social skill instruction, which often gets overlooked in the classroom. BIB focuses on a piece of children's literature and has an accompanying lesson plan about how to incorporate literacy, social skills and social studies instruction into the exercise.
