Abstract

The article discusses a study on airway management for neonates and infants with severe micrognathia and upper airway obstruction who underwent mandibular distraction (MD) osteogenesis at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, New South Wales from 2004 to 2007. Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) was found in six patients. Acute cyanotic episodes with cerebral hypoxia could reportedly result from inadequate treatment. The benefit of a long-term tracheostomy to infants with severe micrognathia is noted.
