Abstract
- The article discusses the artistic influence of American painter Gilbert Stuart on 19th century artists. It describes Stuart's portraits of famous Americans such as U.S. president George Washington, his relationship to such artists as Joseph Delaplaine, Benjamin Waterhouse, and Henry Pickering, and his artistic role in criticizing British political policies during the American Revolution. Other subjects under discussion include Stuart's materialism, his use of tobacco, cigars, and snuff, and his satirical and mocking portraits of British king George III.
