Abstract

The article offers information on the historic Mamilla Cemetery of Jerusalem. It states that historic cemeteries are protected by laws in most countries except in Israel, resulting into their destruction. It examines the historic changes underwent by the Moslem cemetery such as the guardianship of Israeli Department of Absentee Landholders in 1948 that led to the creation of Independence public park by the Jerusalem municipality in 1967, the construction of the Center for Human Dignity-Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem by Simon Wiesenthal Center with a foundation stone laid by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California in 2004, and the removal of tombs for cable installations and destruction of cemetery in 2005. It also mentions several influential persons buried in Mamilla with grave marks.
