The article examines the economic aspects of the financial crisis in Greece caused by the possibility of default on that country's public debts. The terms of a European Union (EU) bailout, which requires Greece to take drastic actions to reduce its budget deficit, are examined. It is noted that the deflationary impact of those measures cannot be compensated for by a currency devaluation, as Greece is a member of the euro area.
