Abstract

The article discusses radical British orator, writer, and publisher John Thelwall, focusing particularly on his involvement with the political reforming group London Corresponding Society and his treason trial of 1794. A caricature of Thelwall speaking at Copenhagen Fields, England by English caricaturist James Gillray is discussed. Thelwall spoke at two meetings of the London Corresponding Society in 1795 soon after his acquittal from his treason trial. The author explores the political situation in Great Britain during the time including the Treasonable Practices Bill and the Seditious Meetings Bill, legislation intended to stifle political criticisms the British government. Thelwall's political activities during the period are detailed.
