Abstract

The article discusses U.S. Air Force efforts to develop boost-phase intercept (BPI) ballistic missile defenses that attack long-range enemy missiles between launch and low space when their air speeds are low and they emit substantial heat for targeting. Raytheon Missile Systems' program manager Philip Pagliara is cited regarding its Network-Centric Airborne Defense Element (NCADE) anti-ballistic missile. Though U.S. officials will not release operational criteria regarding the NCADE missile, those operational abilities are said to be sufficient to allow for targeting of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) and low-flying satellites.
