Abstract
- The article presents an examination of the 1812 murder of the westward-moving pioneer Thomas Meredith, Sr. along the banks of Pinchona Creek in Montgomery County, Alabama by militant Creek Indians. It offers a reexamination of the location of the murder and explores tavern-owner Sam Moniac's assertion that the killing was accidental despite Meredith's son claiming otherwise. It discusses issues that arise due to the creek having various alternative spellings, explores the Meredith family's life in South Carolina and examines Moniac's possible motivation for declaring the murder accidental.
