Abstract

Allegory, as a method of interpreting the sacred scriptures since Greeks, was used firstly by Philo to understand the Jewish scriptures. Origen is viewed as a climax point of the Christian allegorical interpretation. After brief historical background, this article aims to reveal Origen's view of allegory through some examples. Antiochene School in the Early Church, especially Theodore of Mopsuestia, opposed the allegorical interpretation of the Bible, and claimed that it should be understood in its historical meaning. This article also examines Theodore of Mopsuestia's criticism against Origen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
