Abstract

The article discusses ethnic violence and civil unrest in Kyrgyzstan. In June of 2010 fighting between the majority ethnic Kyrgyz and minority Uzbeks killed several hundred people, destroyed some 2,000 homes, and prompted hundreds of thousands of people to flee the region. Tensions between the two have flared since April, 2010 when President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was deposed and forced to flee the country. In October, 2010 the nation will hold parliamentary elections, which the author believes could spark renewed violence if candidates for nationalist parties do well.
