Abstract

Most careers or disciplines these days require people to attend to their professional and personal development. Many offer personal development plans, which help the individual to discern strengths and weaknesses, and areas where further training would enhance their skills. Training doesn't end with the gaining of professional qualifications, but is a lifetime, or career-long process. This article contrasts this with the lack of concern with the personal development of Christians, particularly in the non-conformist churches in Wales, which have a long tradition of excellent and life-long development in discipleship, and argues for the re-establishment of the churches' historic role as educators.
