Abstract

The aim of this paper is to argue that part of this dilemma results from the abandonment of the concepts of r<oum>le. Its reinstatement, in suitably modified ways, may provide that sense of form which is missing from much interactionist writing. The argument is based upon a study of professional-client interaction in various medical settings in Scotland and the United States.[2] The study was not undertaken in search of r<oum>les, indeed it was initially assumed that these, like the unicorn, would never be seen again.
